Opera Etiquette
We hope these pointers will help you have a great
opera experience.
1. Please arrive on time.
Be in your seat before the curtain goes up.
2. Please try not to talk during the performance.
Wait until intermission or, if you must, whisper quietly.
3. Please do not sing or hum along with the performer.
Instead, listen and watch everything carefully so you do not miss
anything.
4. Please turn off all alarm watches, pagers, and
cell phones. They can distract the performer as well as the audience.
5. Try to visit the restroom before the curtain
goes up, or wait until intermission, so that you won't have to leave
your seat during the performance.
6. You might wish to read the story of the opera
before you see the performance.
7. Allow yourself to believe the story as it is
told on-stage. Suspension of disbelief is a powerful force!
8. Listen to the music and let your emotions respond.
9. Some people select their favorite character
or singer and watch that performer carefully. You might look to
identify what makes a particular artist stand out.
10. Enjoy yourself!
